Unix
A computer operating system developed
by AT&T Bell Labs and used to develope the Internet. Its main
use is as a multi-user server environment. UNIX is often used to
run computer systems at ISPs, hosting companies, universities and
large corporations. Most of the first webservers were developed
in UNIX environments.
Upgrade
Normally refers to a newer version of
software, or a version with an enhanced feature set. If you already
own a previous version of the software, you can purchase an upgrade
version for a lower price than a new version. In terms of hardware,
you can upgrade your system by adding more memory, or any component
that makes your system better or faster. Some graphics cards let
you upgrade them by plugging more memory onto the board.
Upload
Transferring a file or files from the
user's computer to a remote computer.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator, a.k.a. Internet
Address. This is what is used to give Web addresses for HTML, VRML,
WAV and other files. It simply contains the Internet name of the
machine containing the data and the path to the file. The address
also includes what protocol should be used. The URL indicates the
type of document it is and the address of the computer on which
the specific web site can be found. (Hypertext Transfer Protocol
document denoted by "http://").
Usenet
Bulletinboard-like network that exchange network news information
featuring thousands of "newsgroups".

V ::
Vector Graphics
As opposed to raster graphics, vector
graphics are composed of groups of colored lines.
Virus
A program that makes unbidden copies of
itself. Sometimes these copies are added on to executable files,
and other times they are part of Word or Excel documents, called
Macro Viruses. The virus will usually have some eventual effect
on systems that are infected. Often, the intent of a virus is malicious.
Sometimes the intent is not malicious, but due to the spreading
of the virus, it becomes a malicious act.
VRML
Virtual Reality Modeling Language- A programming language that supports
graphical animation of virtual spaces of World Wide Web pages. Detailed
three-dimensional images can be created with small programs, allowing
the programs to arrive quickly at usersÈ computers and be
viewed easily with special VRML browser applications.
